Linux in the Shell

A great screen cast/pod cast by Dann S Washko linux in the shell.

From his own website:

Linux In The Shell aims to explore the use of many commands a user can run in the Bash Shell.  Tutorials include a write up with examples, an audio component about the write up, and a video component to demonstrate the usage of the command.

I have found his tutorials and explenations immensly helpfull in learning to use the bash shell more effectively from the basics to some of the more esoteric.

UEFI is relivitly new and secureboot is turned on by default under windows 8.  This can cause some issues when installing ubuntu side by side with windows. Migrated from previous site

Linux has a reputation for robustness but there are still plenty of ways to damage a perfectly working system. Here we share some of the ways you can trash Linux.

01. Fill a filesystem

If the filesystem containing /var fills up, nothing can write its log messages and all sorts of system processes may stall. This can be caused by a runaway process spamming /var/log or, if everything is on the same filesystem, it could be all the downloads in your home directory.

migrated from previous page:

For system and network administrators or other users who frequently deal with sessions on multiple machines, SSH ends up being one of the most oft-used Unix tools. It usually works so well that until you use it for something slightly more complex than starting a terminal session on a remote machine, you tend to use it fairly automatically. However, the ~/.ssh/config file bears mentioning for a few ways it can make using the ssh a client a little easier.

Not Everyone Can Install Linux?

Recoverd from previous page prior to site migration:

It was just the other day the suggestion was made that Linux is best-suited for bachelors. That assertion set off quite a little storm of controversy, as alert readers may recall, both here on these virtual pages and elsewhere throughout the blogosphere.

The latest match to be tossed onto this tinderbox of a topic? A post over on LXer provocatively titled, “Anyone can use the Linux operating system.”
